Madurai, the ancient citadel of the warrior Goddess Meenakshi Amman, is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Some 4000 years old, and looming with myths & mystiques, Madurai is a glorious saga of temples, dynasties, and legends. Its old-world charm and mystical aura are much evident in its jasmine fragrant alleyways that buzz with the soulful chaos and legacy of the fish-eyed Goddess Meenakshi Amman.
It is often said that if you have to visit only one temple in South India, then it should be the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai. It is the focal point of Madurai, much apparent in the belief that the city was built around the Shiv Lingam in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. This sprawling temple complex, spread over an area of 14 acres is pretty much a ‘living temple’ as a lot happens within its long corridors. Its elegant arches, intricately carved pillars, vividly painted walls & ceilings, and around 33,000 colorful sculptures make the temple an architectural legend.
The spectacular Thousand Pillared Hall, near the temple’s Eastern Gopuram, is home to a fascinating museum showcasing intricately carved sculptures with the highlight being a huge bronze figurine of Nataraja, a form of Lord Shiva.
This spectacular palace was built in 1635 by King Thirumalai Nayak to mark the shifting of capital from Trichy to Madurai. A daunting structure, with imposing gates, exquisite stucco work on domes & arches, and graceful pillars, Thirumalai Palace narrates the glorious saga of the Nayak dynasty. Catch the spectacular light & sound show held at the palace to know more about its history & glory.

The best place to shop in Madurai would be the shops inside the temple and the local market near it. Elegant Sugundi saris, gorgeous cotton fabric, exquisite bell metal lamps, bronze figurines, and many such artistic souvenirs lie the local markets.
Check out the local eateries of Madurai for a mouthwatering fare of mutton samosas, spicy biryani, piquant tomato rice, and the staple idli-dosa-sambhar, cooked in Madurai style! Finish your meal with Jigarthanda, the cool dessert of Madurai.
The best time to visit Madurai would be in winter from October to March.
